To become a fully qualified car driver you must first pass two 2 tests; the theory test and the practical test. Both of these tests are devised by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA).

1) The Theory and Hazard Perception Test. This must be passed first. You cannot apply for the practical test until you have done so. You can sit the theory test at any time and as many times as you like, even before you take any driving lessons. The theory test is in two parts: - The Hazard Perception test is a computer based test to assess how well you can recognise and respond to hazards on the road. It comprises of a drivers eye view of a number of road situations. You are required to click a mouse when you see a hazard or developing hazard. The pass mark is 44 out of 75. The Multiple Choice is a touch screen computer test where you’ll be asked 50 questions about the highway code. The pass mark is 43 out of 50.

2) The Practical Test. You will usually take this test after a programme of driving lessons with an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) and when you are deemed ready and safe to attempt the test. Usually, you will take the test in the car in which you are learning or another that you are familiar with that is fully insured. The practical test takes around 40 minutes. Before taking to the road, your examiner with ask you 2 questions regarding the car mechanics.
